This is a good-faith draft, written to describe what Dear Ottie actually does with your data today. It has not yet been reviewed by a lawyer and will be reviewed and finalized before this app is publicly launched. If anything here is unclear, the feedback box at the bottom of any reading is the fastest way to reach us.
What we collect
To generate a reading, we ask for:
- Your name or a nickname, so a reading can address you
- Your birth date
- Your birth time, if you know it — optional, but a reading is more precise with it
- Your birth city
- Your gender, only if and when you choose to add it — used solely to shape the Romance category in some readings, never assumed or required
If you use the chat feature, whatever you type is sent along with your chart to generate a response. Chat is free-form: if you choose to mention your health, relationships, finances, or anything else personal, that text is handled the same way as the rest of your chat message — see “Where it's processed” and “Third parties” below.
Why we need it
Your birth date, time, and city are used to calculate your Western astrology chart (sun, moon, and ascendant) and your Four Pillars of Destiny (BaZi) chart — the astronomical and calendrical math behind every reading this app generates. Your chat messages are used only to write a personalized response to what you asked.
Where it's processed
Your chart data and chat messages are sent to Anthropic's Claude API to generate your readings and chat responses. Your birth city is looked up against a place database to find its coordinates at the moment you submit the form — those exact coordinates are used once, to do the astronomical calculation, and are not saved anywhere. What we keep afterward is the city's display name (for example, “Seoul, South Korea”) and the charts already computed from it, not the raw coordinates.
Where it's stored
Reading data lives in our database (Redis, hosted by Upstash). A reading you generate without signing in is tied to its own private, hard-to-guess link — anyone with that link can view it, so treat it like you would any private document link. Once you sign in, your readings and any saved profiles (yourself, or people you've added, like a partner) are tied to your account instead.
How long we keep it
Retention depends on what the data is:
- A reading created without an account (its chart, birth details, and any free readings generated for it) is kept for 90 days, then automatically deleted
- An account, its saved profiles, and paid readings tied to it (compatibility, Major Fortunes) are kept for up to a year after they're last touched, and refreshed for another year each time you use them — so an account you keep coming back to doesn't expire, but one you fully abandon eventually does
- Major Fortune (decade-by-decade) readings, once unlocked, are kept for up to five years
- Chat conversation history is kept for 90 days
- Anonymous product feedback you send us is kept indefinitely, since it isn't tied to an account and has nothing to expire
These are the actual technical expiration windows built into the app today, not a promise about future policy — we may change these as the product matures, and this page will be updated to match.
Deleting your data
You can remove a saved person (a partner or anyone else you've added) yourself at any time from their card on your Profile page.
There isn't yet a self-serve “delete my account” button. To request that your account and everything tied to it be deleted, use the feedback box at the bottom of any reading page and say so — include the email address on your account, or a link to one of your readings, so we can find and remove the right data. We handle these by hand and will confirm once it's done.
Who your data passes through
A short, plain list of the outside services involved in running this app:
- Anthropic — generates your readings and chat responses from the chart data and messages we send it
- Supabase — handles account sign-in (magic link email or Google)
- Paddle — processes payments if you buy Leaves; we never see or store your card details ourselves
- Vercel — hosts the app and its database
We don't sell your data, and we don't share it with anyone beyond what's needed to run the app, listed above.
A note on accuracy
Readings are AI-generated and for entertainment and self-reflection only — they're not professional medical, psychological, financial, or legal advice, and shouldn't be treated as fact about you or anyone else.
Questions
The feedback box at the bottom of any reading page reaches us directly — it's the fastest way to ask about this policy, request that your data be deleted, or flag anything that looks wrong.
Again: this is a draft written in good faith to match what the app does today. It will be reviewed and finalized by a lawyer before public launch.
